Good morning everyone; I am currently reviewing plans for a Bed & Breakfast. It is an old school bldg. being renovated into this type of classification. My questions are as follows; Would an A.F.I.C. be required in each of the bedrooms? Does a microwave, refrigerator, coffee maker no range top or stove meet the criteria for a "permanent provisions for cooking" as noted in NEC 210.18? There will be some units with ranges and/or stove tops, micro waves refrigerators etc.. 210.12 Arc-Fault Circuit-Interrupter Protection (A) Definition: Arc-Fault Circuit Interrupter An arc-fault circuit interrupter is a device intended to provide protection from the effects of arc faults by recognizing characteristics unique to arcing and by functioning to de-energize the circuit when an arc fault is detected. (B) Dwelling Unit Bedrooms All 120-volt, single phase, 15- and 20-ampere branch circuits supplying outlets installed in dwelling unit bedrooms shall be protected by a listed arc-fault circuit interrupter, combination type installed to provide protection of the branch circuit. 210.18 Guest Rooms and Guest Suites Guest rooms and guest suites that are provided with permanent provisions for cooking shall have branch circuits and outlets installed to meet the rules for dwelling units. This new requirement ensures that guest rooms and guest suites equipped with permanent provisions for cooking are treated the same as dwelling units in regard to the branch circuit requirements contained in Parts I, II, and III of Article 210. I have researched the legal definition of dwelling units and buildings. The supreme court has defined that all buildings can be dwellings, but not all dwellings can be buildings. I will be interested in your comments and thoughts. Once again thanks.
