As I understand it, the primary method of lintel specification is by reference to the Miami-Dade NOA and the Florida product approval certification number. While the initial certification of these products is supported by engineering analysis, once the product receives approval it does not require site specific engineering. In this sense it is not a pre-engineered item. As a secondary method of specification, the product approval rule does not prevent an engineer from doing site specific engineering on all lintels. If the intended application exceeds the limits of the original approval by span or by loading or by some other significant deviation then site specific engineering would be required. In this case the engineering documents submitted for permit would need to specify the construction and use of the lintel. > > ________________________________ > > From: codetalk-bounces at myfloridacode.com on behalf of Al Koskey > Sent: Thu 11/13/2008 2:43 PM > To: codetalk at myfloridacode.com > Cc: akoskey at petersonmyers.com > Subject: [Florida Code Talk] Pre-cast Masonary Lintels > > > > With regards to the design of pre-cast masonry lintels: > > (1) Has anyone seen any with a product approval code? > > (2) Are they designed according to a prescriptive code that designates a > certain rebar size and number and a certain concrete section size > according to type of load like a wood header would be?: > > (3) Or, do pre-cast companies usually custom engineer each item for each > job? > > Thanks in advance for your replies. > > Sincerely, > > Alex Koskey, Pres. > Koskey Corporation, Inc. > Florida Lic.
