Terrance:  Your inspector is correct.  bd had a good idea and that is 
filling the void.  I would run this past the inspector or a plans reviewer 
before doing it but here is what I would suggest.  Using a fairly dry piece 
of  pt, plane it down so that it will fit snugly in the void.  Apply a 
generous bead of adhesive (PL premium urethane is a good one) to both the 
wood wall and the backside of the brick.  Slide filler piece into place.
