[Florida Code Talk] Window Replacement with Brick veneer

Glen that is a field solution but I would still require a letter from
the manufacturer before attempting to fasten to a glued in buck. There
are other issues affecting the drainage plane in the veneer as well that
could create some liability for he window installer. Again, the proper
way to install a replacement window in this application is to cut the
drywall back to allow the thicker window to be inset enough to gain
proper transfer of loads to the framing.

I spent about 20 years selling as a wholesaler and then as a contractor
supervising installation of replacement windows, my recommendations are
based on sound installation that complies with recommendations contained
in many manufacturers detail instructions and drawings. I am sure PGT
would agree with the recommendation to insure the window gets a good
bite in the buck.

Terrance: Your inspector is correct. bd had a good idea and that is
filling the void. I would run this past the inspector or a plans
reviewer before doing it but here is what I would suggest. Using a
fairly dry piece of pt, plane it down so that it will fit snugly in the
void. Apply a generous bead of adhesive (PL premium urethane is a good
one) to both the wood wall and the backside of the brick. Slide filler
piece into place.

hope that works for ya,

glen mast

The proper way to install this is to cut the drywall back to allow the
window to come into the structure where it can be properly mounted.
Filling the void will not transfer the load to the framing properly and
under negative pressure will trnsfer the load to the veneer which is not
part of the MWFRS.

I have a frame building with a brick veneer It has a 1" space between
the two. The inspector is not allowing the window to be installed
because of the void. he says the window must be supported fully for the
3.5 inches of the window thickness. The outside is supported by the
veneer and the inside is supported by the drywall and the double studs
underneath. The void is where the screw holes are located. We wanted to
drill other holes in further to catch the studs and he said he needs
engineering from the manufacture PGT to allow this change.

Your inspector is likely correct about drilling new holes,. as all of
these building parts such as windows have been approved for their use
with their engineering. Ya, common sense would say drill and it would
work great, but if it fails with the next storm, who ya gonna call. It
(like everything else) boils down to liability. Why can't you just fill
the void? Hope this helps.

I'd say, simply work with PGT engineering, My experience has been
that window company engineering departments are very accessible.
You are fortunate in this case you are working with a Florida
company - they will understand you more readily than
out-of-staters.
