Kitchens shall have a clear passageway of not less than 3’ feet between counter fronts and appliances or counter fronts and walls. Hope this helps. Thank you Sam. I don't know what the CODE WAS BACK IN 1998 when I built all those houses, but my plans with 3' clearance between countertops passed plan review, permitting and all the inspections. I do think I remember 1 or 2 inspectors actually measuring between countertops (they thought they were going to get me, thinking that I had 3' between the cabinet face, and less between countertops. Then they told me that I was slipping because they were measuring 38" or 39", when my plans showed 36". I told them I was going to charge the owner for the extra room. Never collected on that one. Of course, somewhere in that house a room was 2 to 3" smaller. I didn't realize that the current code endorses my old design. Thanks again, and have a good weekend.
