Design sarasota, Licensing for building officials, plans examiners and inspectors has been a State requirement since Oct. 1, 1993. All inspectors and plan examiners in Sarasota County hold multiple licenses in more than one discipline. In fact all have what is called a 1 and 2 family dwelling certification which allows each of them to perform inspections in all four disciplines. Each had to prove a minimum of 5 years experience and pass an exam for building, plumbing, mechanical and electrical. (All of ours have more than 20+ years) This license is very difficult to qualify for and the exam is intense, requiring knowledge in all four disciplines. Building departments just like private industry have had to layoff many good people but also retained the best with the most licenses and experience, we have become more efficient by being able to send one person to perform the work of possibly 4. If you have any concerns about the quality of an inspection in Sarasota County not being at a level of your expectation, please contact me at 861-6020. ________________________________ From: codetalk-bounces at myfloridacode.com To: codetalk at myfloridacode.com Sent: Mon Apr 26 17:13:55 2010 Subject: [Florida Code Talk] Inspectors I was always under the impression that building inspectors had to be certified in the phase of the industry that they inspect. Is this still or ever the case? It seems that I have the same inspector on one particular job in an undisclosed community (the community name is left out to protect the innocent), and they seem to know very little about some phases they are inspecting.
