Ken, The class action law suit was against Louisiana-Pacific, and the siding they manufactured (panel as well as lap) was manufactured to resist absorbing water; but they did not consider what would happen when the "seal" was breached by saw cuts and nails (especially counter-sunk). I suspect that the original builder on your subject job put the house wrap up directly over the studs with the intention of applying the lap siding directly thereto, until someone (like the inspector) said "no way", you have to have "shear wall" sheathing behind lap siding. They just failed to comply with the proper order of installation. Have a nice evening, Paul Myrick, C.B.C. Jacksonville, FL In a message dated 2/1/2010 7:08:54 P.M. Eastern Standard Time, Ken at artisanbilt.com writes: Has anyone ever heard of putting the house wrap on under the sheathing (OSB)? I’m doing a siding replacement job where the lap siding had failed (can ’t remember the name of it but it had a class action law suit against it several years ago). There are some spots where the siding allowed the OSB sheathing underneath to become saturated and thus rotten. As we were removing some of the bad spots of sheathing to be replaced we found that the framing had been covered with TYPAR. It’s unfortunate that it wasn’t on the outside of the sheathing as it would have made our siding replacement job MUCH simpler. I was just wondering if anyone had ever seen this done and if it was ever an accepted practice to do this or is this just another example of how NOT to build a house. I know the code (703.2) states that the weather-resistant material will be applied over studs or sheathing but I’m pretty sure this is not intended to mean you can/should put it under the structural sheathing, right?
