Tom is correct by saying the Orlando area does not require drywall contractors to be licensed. However the Tampa Bay area does and most other counties do as well. I am not a GC I am a state certified drywall contractor which allows me to do a little more than slap boards on the wall. Feel free to look me up on the DBPR website. No insults intended here, just defending my business. An occ license now called a business tax does not qualify a sub to be called licensed. All my subs that I hire ARE licensed. However, for things like sheetrock, tile, etc they are not required to take any type of test or prove any knowledge whatsoever. The license consist of a business license obtained at the local tax collector's office and stating on the paperwork that they are in the business of "drywall." I just looked back in the CILB statutes and I don't see anything that requires a drywall sub to be licensed via testing and a board. My point is that anyone can go down and get a business license and declare themselves a XXXXX contractor. There's nothing that requires them to have even a basic knowledge of the task at hand. I'm sorry if others are hiring unlicensed subs and driving your prices down. However, I'm not one of them. I only hire licensed subs...no exceptions. I do not know what area you are from but all the Tampa Bay area surrounding counties require you to be a state or county licensed drywall contractor. It is those that continue to hire unlicensed subs that drive my prices down to compete with their substandard workmanship.
