1. Not if he's smart enough to put it in his contract that he's not 
responsible for prior work.

2. Probably not since they weren't in contract with each other.  If #1 was 
followed then the homeowner is responsible and he can sue the original 
contractor.

3. Just a guess, if he ABANDONED the job (and there is a legal definition 
for that) then they don't have to let him fix it instead of getting sued. 
If he was fired the story may be different.

You (or the homeowner) really need to be talking to a lawyer about this.
