Regardless of whether you assist ISO or do not, your city is going to get a grading anyway. It is just liable to be a Class 10 due to non-participation. As far as the value, for each class difference, a 1% difference in the property insurance applies to the property for the live of the structure. All other factors being the same, a property that is graded a class 2 will pay 5% less than a property that is graded a class 7. In addition, the BCEGS class is a factor in your jurisdiction's flood grading if they participate in the flood insurance program. The same class 2 to a class 7 BCEGS difference can create a significant difference in flood insurance rates. Lastly, the BCEGS is the only financial incentive that a local government has to provide resources to the building department. If you throw away ISO, you have lost a significant tool to assist you in justifying an efficient and effective building department. Anthony C.
